Common Questions About Medicare Insurance

1. What is Medicare and who qualifies for it?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people aged 65 and older, though it also covers younger individuals with certain disabilities or end-stage renal disease. Most people qualify automatically at age 65 if they’ve worked and paid Medicare taxes.

2. What’s the difference between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage?

Original Medicare (Parts A & B) covers hospital care and medical services, but it doesn’t include everything. Medicare Advantage (Part C) is an all-in-one alternative that combines Parts A & B and often adds prescription drugs, dental, vision, hearing, and wellness benefits.

3. Does Medicare cover prescription drugs?

Not under Original Medicare. To get drug coverage, you need either a stand-alone Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D) or a Medicare Advantage Plan that includes drug benefits.

4. What is Medigap insurance?

Medigap, also called Medicare Supplement Insurance, helps cover costs not paid by Original Medicare—like deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. It provides financial protection and makes healthcare costs more predictable.

5. When can I enroll in Medicare?

Most people enroll during their Initial Enrollment Period—a 7-month window that begins three months before your 65th birthday month and ends three months after. If you miss this, there are other enrollment periods, but you may face penalties.

6. Is Medicare free?

Part A (hospital insurance) is usually premium-free if you or your spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years. However, Parts B, C, and D generally require monthly premiums, and out-of-pocket costs may still apply.

7. Can I have Medicare and employer health insurance at the same time?

Yes. If you’re still working and have employer coverage, Medicare may coordinate with your employer plan. In some cases, Medicare is the secondary payer, and in others it becomes primary—depending on your employer’s size and coverage rules.

8. Do Medicare plans cover dental, vision, or hearing?

Original Medicare does not cover routine dental, vision, or hearing services. Many Medicare Advantage Plans, however, include these benefits. A supplemental or stand-alone plan may also be an option.

9. Can I switch Medicare plans if I’m not happy?

Yes. The Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7) allows you to make changes. There’s also the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31), where you can switch or return to Original Medicare.

10. Does Medicare cover long-term care or nursing homes?

Medicare covers short-term skilled nursing or rehabilitation stays, but it does not cover long-term custodial care in nursing homes. For long-term care needs, you may need separate insurance or personal funds.

11. Will all my doctors accept Medicare?

Most doctors in the U.S. do accept Medicare, but not all. It’s always best to confirm with your healthcare provider before scheduling appointments, especially if you’re considering a Medicare Advantage plan with a specific network.

12. Why should I work with a Medicare Insurance Broker?

A licensed Medicare broker, like David Bradley with Medicare A2Z, simplifies the process by explaining your options, comparing plans, and helping you avoid costly mistakes. Brokers are typically paid by insurance companies—not by clients—so their guidance comes at no additional cost to you.
