Understanding Medicare can feel confusing, especially when you’re trying to decide between Medicare Advantage and a Medicare Supplement (also called Medigap). While both options help people manage healthcare costs, they work in very different ways. Medicare Advantage, also known as Part C, is an alternative to Original Medicare
These plans are offered by private insurance companies and essentially replace your Original Medicare coverage. With Medicare Advantage, you still receive Part A and Part B benefits, but through the private insurer’s network and rules. Many Advantage plans also bundle in additional perks like dental, vision, hearing, gym memberships, or prescription drug coverage — extras not included in Original Medicare. However, these plans often come with copays, network restrictions, and varying out-of-pocket costs depending on the services you use.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies work differently. Instead of replacing Original Medicare, Medigap plans are purchased in addition to it. Their purpose is to fill the “gaps” in Original Medicare by helping cover out-of-pocket expenses such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.
With a Medigap plan, you can see any doctor nationwide who accepts Medicare, without worrying about network limitations or needing referrals. While Medigap plans generally don’t include extra benefits like dental or vision, they offer predictable coverage and fewer surprise costs, making them an attractive option for people who want maximum flexibility and financial protection.
Choosing between Medicare Advantage and Medigap often comes down to personal preferences: whether you prioritize low monthly premiums and added benefits (Advantage) or value broader provider choice and minimized out-of-pocket costs (Medigap). Both options can be excellent — the key is selecting the one that fits your health needs, budget, and lifestyle.
